Title Hard Knocks
Copyright Title Hard Knocks
Released 1980
Production Year 1980
Director Don McLennan
Comments The broken structure of the film attracted mixed reations, some reviews rendering it 'destructive' while others praising it as a bold compositional leap. The film entertained only a small distribution but won Tracy Mann and AFI Award for best actress while the film itself won the 'Jury Prize' in the same year. Critical acclaim for the film springs greatly from its realist examination of women in the patriarchal urban Australian landscape.
Synopsis A great one liner summing up the films pre-occupations may be found on its release poster. It read "At 16 sam was into everything but all she got was hard knocks." This film follows a young delinquent, Sam, from her broken and emotionally abusive home, to a 'tough' detention centre and back again. It is basically the story of one girls struggle to break free from her past (and all its dubious and criminal temtations) to conform to a higher social plateau.
