Comments This review of "Hard Knocks" is brief, but good! It is very succintly written getting it's message across directly and clearly. It paints a very vivid image of the film wihtin a few sentences and does not dwell on one point in a monotonous frenzy like so many other reviews of this film I have encountered!
Synopsis Bennett believed "Hard Knocks" truly attempted to depict a 'slice of life' portrait of 'a punk delinquent turned fashion model.' To this end, he sees the film as trying to develop a realist effect; but never fully realising this intention. McLennan's failure to probe the characters motives and feelings to any great depth is labelled the reason for this failure.

Bennett found the fragmented and scrambled structure of the film (cutting between the two 'Sam's) also thwarts the character development.

Bennett sees the central character as a victim of an abusive and criminal up-bringing who is searching for an indipendent identity free from her criminal past. This he believes, is the film's drive - and a very noble drive at that!
