Comments |
I found this article very useful throughout my investigation of the film "Hard Knocks" which Hanrahan is primarily reviewing.
He discusses a good range of ideas and responses to the film which enables readers to grasp the wide range of arguments and ideas the film itself initiated during it's 1980 release.
It is easy to read and Hanrahan makes his points quickly but adequately. |
Synopsis |
The article begins by listing "Hard Knocks" AFI awards success where it won the 'Jury Prize,' and 'Best Actress' categories (Tracy Mann). Hanrahan attributes this success to McLennan's focus on the portreyal of 'lefestyles' existing within the contemporary society during the films period of production and release.
Hanrahan critiques Tray Mann's performance as 'Samantha' believing it to be varied and diverse. He found the film to evoke sympathy and audience engagement which he widely attributes to its exploitation of a 'relevant social situation' and it's choice of focus : 'youth.'
A pitfall of "Hard Knocks" in Hanrahan's eyes, is it's inability to provide a resolution, rather presenting the social issue of 'youth crime' as an ananswerable, un-resolvable anomaly.
To conclude his review, Hanrahan notes the film's universal appeal to all areas of society, brought about by it's ethnographical tendencies.
