Jack Thompson was an Australian actor and he was picketed the entrance to the Mayfair Cinema to protest at the proposed closure of the cinema, because the owner, Hoyts Theatres Ltd had let the premises to a shoe emporium. The seating capacity kept decreasing meant there were not much people watched movies there and one of the effective reasons was the arrival of television, the theatre was forced into a policy of restricted screenings because not many wanted to watch movies in the cinema. Jack Thompson also said that there were lots of cinemas demolished, they should keep the old cinemas and renovate the cinemas, instead of destroy it. (Kylie Pui Yan Yeung)
