A very interesting article, as it compare and contrast the leading Australian male actors of the 70's and 80's to the ones now.
It touches not only on personality of the actors off screen but also on male characters on recent local films. As audiences, can most commonly find a more sensitive male characters on screen now, then the old, big ego bloke male character on screen now. It is that all new sentimental bloke and no more archetypal masculine screen idol! |
Synopsis |
The new twist of the male characters the audiences want to see on screen and more new age sensitive male lead that are in touch with the feminine side.
No more that big ego, male bloke. Since the 90's Australian cinema has been predominantly urban and contemporary. The challenge to traditional blokeynedd represented by feminism and the rise of gay and queer culture had made the old archetypes seem passe. And hence, giving others the feeling of Australin masculinity seem to be in crisis.
And in most recent film, Two Hands, is enacting of a dialogue between to generations of male archetype. Between Heath Ledger, the sensitive new age man and Bryan Brown, the old tough bloke!
Generally, we, the audience have been sick all seeing another Mel Gibson is making, we expect more young and upcoming actors like Heath Ledger! |
