Comments In the first paragraph of this article Reardon points out that every film in the Shifting Sands collection features a female character and that most of the directors are men.

Reardon however, fails to expand on or explore this interesting fact choosing instead to criticize the films for failing to deal with “meatier issues”.

It is worthwhile noting that Shifting Sands was an initiative designed for Indigenous people to tell their own stories. They were not, according to Wal Saunders, manager of the Indigenous Branch of the Australian Film Commssion, intended to be “message films”.

Synopsis A review of the Shifting Sands collection of short Indigenous films in which only one film, Passing Through, by Mark Olive, escapes criticism. Provides a brief synopsis of individual titles.
