History of the Argosy

The Argosy was built as the Murrumbeena Public Hall in 1932. Its administrator was the Caulfield City Council. In 1937, the hall was renamed in The Argosy and in 1965 in Capri. The hall had a capacity of 350 seats, which was later reduced to 182. The theatre had seven lessees in the years of the Argosy. The Argosy was screened on Friday and Saturday nights at 7.45 and an extra show for children was offered. After a few years, the Argosy got a new screen and a new look. When it became a new lessee and the new name Capri, it showed a lot of science fiction films and was successful until around 1974. In the early years the Argosy did not use newspaper advertising. However, the Argosy was successful. The building was demolished in 1988 and a retirement home was built. Today there is a nursing home in 89-91 Murrumbeena Road in Murrumbeena. (Melissa Lorz)
