Scarce Resources |
It is clear, after attempting to research and study this topic, that it has not been researched in this way before. There is very little material available on The Agora, hence why the references I have provided are so vital to the topic.

Short Overview of The Agora Cinema |
The Agora Cinema is at LaTrobe Universitys campus in Bundoora. It operated in the 1980s and 1990s as a public cinema as well as a large screening space for the film society at LaTrobe. During the 1970s the film society proposed to the Union that a larger space with improved equipment be built. Soon after the planning of The Agora Cinema begun, and it was an extensive and long period of discussing, planning and construction. Valhalla Cinemas were the first proprietors of The Agora Cinema, however they stayed around only for a few years. During mid 1980s, a large cinema at Southland opened up very close to LaTrobe, therefore The Agoras local crowd quickly died. By 2000, The Agora Cinema was closed to the public. Today, The Agora operates only as a lecture theatre for students and teachers. The film society will still hold events in this space, however it is not utilised in the way that it once was with the inclusion of the public. The references noted here all tell the story of the The Agora, from Union minutes portraying the discussion and planning of the cinema, to photos of the building, to film advertisements shown there. It is clear that it took many years of planning before the opening night of The Agora finally came. The cinema was a place for families to come and enjoy a local film, such as a Robin Williams comedy. All references here are individual pieces that tell a different part to the story, and are all reliable and excellent sources.
