Comments This is a vital document for the research of The Agora. It is extremely important as it puts The Agora into context in the 1970’s/80’s and completely explains how it was able to be successful for the years it was.

This document is a few different letters and reports compiled into a folder, about how Valhalla was the first proprietor of The Agora Cinema.

Valhalla Cinemas was a well-known stream of cinemas owned by Barry Peak. The Valhalla in Richmond was known for holding two long-running films for many years. These were The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1978) and The Blues Brothers (1980). It also held 24-hour film marathons.

From the late 1970’s, Valhalla expanded within Melbourne and also in Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane. Peak opened: The Academy Valhalla Twin Cinema on the corner of Swanston and Collins Streets, Valhalla at the Agora at La Trobe University and late shows at The Astor in St Kilda and then at The National in St Kilda.

Some of these documents are letters from Michael Torney, Union Secretary/Agora Manager, addressed to Ms. Sue Johnson, Valhalla Cinema Manager, speaking of the growing professional relationship between The Agora and Valhalla. There is one document which stands out, as it is a Report on the Agreement between The Agora/LaTrobe and Valhalla, including operating hours that the Valhalla can use the cinema and when LaTrobe can use the cinema.

This is a very useful, reliable and legitimate resource as it continues to paint the picture of The Agora in the 1970’s and 1980’s. It brings together a well-known company (Valhalla) from those years and shows how Michael Torney and other Union members worked with Barry Peak to come to this agreement.

Synopsis Documents compiled into a bound folder. A few different letters and reports, referring to the agreement between LaTrobe and Valhalla for Valhalla to be the first proprietor of The Agora Cinema.
