Comments |
This interview details Hayes' involvement with Kennedy Miller Productions from his initial involvement in the 'Mad Max 2' project where he came in as co-writer. He initially became involved with George Miller and Byron Kennedy who were aware of his prominence as a journalist. Perhaps the greatest point of interest is Hayes' penetrating comments regarding George Miller; intellectually, professionally and personally. Hayes discusses the definition of roles carried out by the 'principles' of Kennedy Miller in light of the 'collaborative' approach applied to the company's projects. This element of the interview is concerneed with issues featured prominently in many interviews conducted with George Miller or discussions of Kennedy Miller as corporate author.
Perhaps the most intersting element of this interview is Murray's probing questions relating to Kennedy Miller's preoccupation with and mythic construction of Australian history. He also mentions the transition undertaken by Kennedy Miller from film to television and relates his experiences as a writer for both mediums.
One of the most telling comments made by Hayes is fostered by Murray's question regarding the 'isolationist' concern of Kennedy Miller. Hayes reveals the reasons for Kennedy Miller's position in the Australian film and television industry by describing the company as 'renegade'! This may provide some useful insight into the sentiment of the company as a whole and how this may in turn affect the output, or cultural product which contributes to (or perhaps is resultant of) popular discourse.
