The film was first released in Australia on the 12th of April in 1979. It was distributed to Australian cinemas by Village Roadshow Pictures. At the time of its release, Alan Finney was the advertising executive for Village Roadshow pictures and played a major role in the theatrical release of the film. In the Australian box office, Mad Max grossed over $5,355,490 which can be said to equate to approximately $20 million in the modern day. These were record breaking figures; a level of success that is, to a degree, attributed to the captivating advertising campaign designed and implemented with Finneys brilliance.

Finney, through Village Roadshow Pictures, opted to release the film at one location in Melbourne to begin with - The East End Cinema. The film was George Millers directional debut, and launched his career.

Synopsis In a dystopic future Australia, law and order has begun to break down. A vicious biker gang murder a cop's family and make his fight with them personal. The film is Australian and stars Mel Gibson is one of his first major roles.
