Name Merata Mita
Birth Year 1942
Comments Merata Mita was born at Maketu in the Bay of Plenty, NZ. Mita was one of nine children, and received a traditional upbringing. She was a very bright student, adn went on to study teaching, eventually becoming a teacher. Remainingg a teacher for 12 years, Mita learnt how to use the school video and 8mm film equipment. She became more interested in filmmaking than teaching, adn hence her career as one of New Zealand toughest filmmakers arose. Her filmography looks like this:
'Karanga Hokianga' 1979
'The Hammer and the Anvil' 1980
'Kekidee-Aroha' 1981
'The Bridge: Men in Dispute' 1982
'Patu!' 1983
'Tonga' 1985
'Mauri' 1988
'Mana Waka' 1990
She has also worked on other peoples films, mainly with Geoff Murphy and Gerd Pohlmann. Other films she has contributed to are:
'Waitangi:the story of a treaty and its inheritors.' 1977
'Koha' 1980-81
'The Protestors' 1982
'South Auckland: Two Cities' 1982
'Auckland F'a-Samoa' 1982
'One of those Blighters' 1982
'Utu' 1983
'The Quiet Earth' 1984
It is likely there are others that I have missed.
Mita is a controversial filmmaker who is very strongly opinionated and fights for her beliefs, in the attempt to change things for the better for the Maori people.
N.B. The birth date above is incorrect except for 1942.
