Name John Honey
Comments John Honey replaced Malcolm Smith as Chief Executive of the Tasmanian Film Corporation in September 1980. He first joined the TFC in 1977, six months after its inception, as a writer and director. He began his professional life as a teacher but soon joined the ABC as a radio announcer. From 1972 to 1977 he worked for ABC Education as a writer, producer and director. His best known series from this period is probably ‘The Colonials’, a drama series set in the early settler period of Australian history used as a teaching aid in schools.

After his contract with the TFC was terminated in 1982 he spent the mid 1980’s making short dramas and documentaries for SBS and the ABC. From 1986 to 1989 Honey returned to the ABC Education Unit to direct ‘Channel 1,2,3,4,5’ and ‘Problem Creek’ amongst other programs.

In 1982 Honey had started a production business with his wife Maria Honey called Sensory Perception Incorporated. In the 1990’s, S.P.I has cornered the world market on aviation history documentaries. The company creates approximately 8-9 hours of television per year which is primarily sold to US cable networks and on the European, Japanese and US video markets.

Honey divides his time between Hobart, Tasmania and Washington, United States. Although Honey has not really worked in Hobart since 1991(he is credited as a script advisor on ‘de Vil’s tas Mania,’ Di Net Films 1992), he retains an office and residence there and maintains contacts within the Australian film and television industry. He has written four screenplays in the last five years, some of which are being optioned in Australia.
