Comments David Goldie is one of Australia’s most successful and celebrated documentary makers. He has been awarded with the Australian Film Institutes (AFI) inaugural Best Documentary Director award, three industry voted Logie Awards, a World Broadcasting award, a Human Rights Award, a Law Society of Australian Award, Australian Teachers of Media Awards as well as a Henry Lawson Award for the best television production of the year. He was also presented the peer voted ‘Excellence in Documentary’ award from the Australian Television Society an unprecedented three times in a five year period.

Goldie was born and raised in Cronulla, NSW and used to wander over the rocks at South Cronulla with a German stills camera he’d saved up for with pocket money yet despite this early interest in capturing images he went on to complete two Diplomas in Acting. One from the Royal Academy of Music and one from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. After returning to Australia from the UK Goldie landed a job making documentaries with the ABC. His first documentary was Out of Sight, Out of Mind. It was planned as a one hour project but aired in two award winning 90 minute episodes and won its time slot in ratings for both episodes. Out of Sight, Out of Mind’s success gave both Goldie and the ABC the confidence to continue making documentaries in the same vein and they went on to produce documentaries such as Nobody’s Children, The Time of Your Life.

After leaving the ABC in 1998 Goldie has continued to produce documentaries but has also taken on new media to create interactive DVD and internet productions. In 2004 the RMIT University’s School of Journalism assembled an eminent board of judges and asked them to select the ‘Best (Australian) Journalism of the 20th Century’. Along with finest examples of journalism across all media, the judges were also asked to select the best documentary films. They selected five - three of them were made by David Goldie. (Airlie)
