Brief account on The Tivoli |
Well regarded amongst the community The Tivoli Picture Theatre was re-established in 1911 and played host to a number of Australian made and International films upon their release. Located on Glenferrie road in Malvern, The Tivoli was highly accessible for movie goers as it was one of the main areas for public transport with the tramline systems in full swing. The hall, which seated up to 900 people had one screen for viewing and was subject for hosting a number of prominent evening functions throughout its ten year reign. The functions would range from Anniversary Dinners to Dinner Balls for members of the State.
Orrie Perry managed the Tivoli whilst his two younger brothers Reginald and Stanley worked there as operators. All three of the gentlemen were the sons of Joseph Perry who was a well renown film producer in Australia. The brothers were best known for producing the remake of The Story of the Kelly Gang, which was a landmark for its time, especially amongst Victorian viewers. The Perry%u2019s had their own production company titled Amalgamated Films, which not only saw the company producing films, but also running cinemas like The Tivoli. Of course, pictures made during that time were silent films, however The Tivoli did display documentary type films as well, which was inspired through the works of Amalgamated Films who produced a range of documentary based work. It could be said that The Tivoli, apart from its admirable location in Malvern, also offered variety amongst the films it displayed, be it local or international based work from film-makers.
The Tivoli closed in May in 1921, in which a new Hoyts Cinema opened up on the same road only a kilometre away.
