Comments As stated in The Malvern Standard (dated 14/10/1911) The Tivoli reopened its doors in 1911. The company's existence before this judging by the article would seem apparent, however there could have been some concerns for the business and its future given it did shut its doors previously for a period of time in order to rebuild and ensure greater fire safety. Whether the cinema was actually called The Tivoli then and run under a different business owner at that point in time is unbeknown. The dates previous to the company first opening cannot be confirmed, which is why, based on early research The Tivoli has been declared as first opening in 1911. CATHS website however in its venue glossary claims The Tivoli opened in 1913 before closing in 1921 and later on being demolished. Whilst the closing date and the company being demolished is correct, the mentioning of it being opened in 1913 is false. Other sources have also confirmed that The Tivoli opened in 1911, none more so important than the Stonnington Council who ran the city of Malvern then, and still do today. The Stonnington History Centre by the Malvern Historical Society would contain records dating back to the time in which The Tivoli Theatre existed.
Synopsis This glossary from the Cinema and Theatre, Historical Society (CATHS) reveals how long each cinema throughout Australia has existed for, many of which are now closed or are demolished, while others are still active.
