Overview

Established in 1891, the heritage listed, St. George theater in Yarraville had a certain charm about it. Whether it was its instantly recognizable fa?ade or its polished hardwood floor, for many, the St. George brings back nostalgic memories. But what may be unique in this is that it may be nostalgic for two separate groups of people. See whilst it was recognized as picture establishment in the first half of the 20th Century, the second half belonged to those dancers of the Universal Dancing Classes of whom thousands were trying to excel at their craft. Where the St. George suffers unlike other contemporaries is largely due to that of the neighbouring Sun Theater. Opening in 1938 the Sun was the far more luxurious single screen cinema that the residents of Yarraville and Melbourne could flock to. Not only that, but it is still one of the premier cinemas in Melbourne and has expanded to even greater heights. So from this we can see how the St. George has lost some of its history. Being overshadowed by a more popular theatre harms the overall legacy of the cinema. Add to this the fact that it spent the last 40 years as a ballroom and is now making way for apartments to be built; its easy to see why it could get lost. In fact it becomes evident that when looking further into the history of the St. George, much more is made of its time as a dance studio as opposed to a theater. It%u2019s often hard to see when things we love get fallen by the wayside. Things get forgotten, become distant memories and as the years past it could feel like they never existed. Which is why the documentation of St. George a quiet and simple theatre in the West of Melbourne is one that ought to be preserved and be able recorded to what the purpose it served in the early film landscape of Australia. It presents an opportunity to learn from an old cinemas establish the relationship it had with the early goings of film in Melbourne. And it%u2019s tale as it stands today shows the change of ownership from being a cinema to a ballroom for dances is a tale worth recounting.
