Written by Denise McGuire in the CinemaRecord, the life of the St George is time-lined in bullet point from it's inception to it's current day status. It lists the times when the cinema was first owner, Annie Parry and the shifting of hands that the cinema has had in ownership.
We can see how the St. George itself evolved in this period for it's initial self was minimal to what it has become as evident by the ownership of J.McFarlane who proposed more addition to the hall as well as other features that have long stood.
It also speaks how in those early years, being a hall, it was used for plays and public gatherings till Annie Parry's death in 1905. The first play being Uncle Tom's Cabin.
As is known with the theatre, the St. George really is a story of two halves. The first half being it's time as a theatre and the second half as a ballroom for Universal Dancing Classes. So Ms McGuire writes about the Pat McGuire decades of ownership of the cinema. From his ownership in 1960, to all the changes he made to make it more dancer friendly which included installing a dance floor and ensuring that the stage was renovated.
Of a theatre where information on it is sparse, this is a great introduction for it. |
