Payback is part of the 'From Sand to Celluloid' collection of short Indigenous films.
The collection is produced in association with the Indigenous Branch of the Australian Film Commission and SBS Independent.
For Warwick Thornton, Writer, Director and DOP, it was essential that the cast have a direct understanding of "payback" under Aboriginal law.
The Old Man, Charlie Matjiwi, is an elder from Echo Island and a law and spiritual leader of the Gumatj people in Arnhemland.
Payback was selected for screenings in the Telluride Film Festival, USA, 1996; selected Cinema Des Antipodes in France, 1996; and , selected for screening at Clermont Ferrand International Film Festival in France, 1997. |
Synopsis |
Paddy has been incarcerated for 20 years only to be punished under Aboriginal law the day he is released. Relying on powerful images and minimal dialogue, 'Payback' explores the significance of Aboriginal law for Aboriginal people and the complexities of punishment under two different laws. |
