Francis (Frank) Palmer Selleck was born on 20 August, 1895 in Nathalia, VIC. As he grew older Selleck attended Numurkah State and Shepparton Agricultural High schools in hopes of becoming a lawyer. Unfortunately his family could not afford the fees and thus Selleck moved to Melbourne and joined the army's senior cadets. Not long after that he found a job as a clerk in the Victorian Audit Office.
In 1915 Selleck enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force and by 1918 he had gained the status of captain and was soon awarded the Military Cross after being wounded in action in June.
In 1923 he helped form the Legacy Club of Melbourne and acted as treasurer. Not long after that he married his wife, Mollie Constance Maud Miller, and obtained acceptance into the Federal Institute of Accountants which allowed him to resign from the audit office and establish his own firm in 1934. Three years later he began to dabble in the film industry by acquiring cinemas throughout Sydney and the suburbs of Melbourne.
Selleck was also the President of the Victorian Independent Exhibitor's Association from 1942-43. After the outbreak of WWII Selleck became a member of the government run Board of Business Administration in which he acted as chief inspector of administration.
In 1949 he was elected to the Melbourne City Council and by 1954 he was elected the 73rd Mayor of Melbourne on the 30 of August. He held the office for three consecutive one-year terms.
In 1956 Selleck failed to win a seat in the Legislative Council but was later knighted that year and appointed K.B.E. From 1954-56 he acted as treasurer of the Victorian branch of the Returned Sailors', Soldiers' and Airmen's Imperial League of Australia.
After retiring from council in 1958, Selleck became the director of a number of companies such as Foy & Gibson and Cox Bros (Australia) Ltd. From 1959-67 he was a member of the board of the Commonwealth Banking Corporation but soon died in Armadale on 2 October 1976. (Catie Davis) |
