Born in New Zealand, he grew up in the small town of Palmeston North and later attended the universtity of Wellington. In 1970-71 he left New Zealandand claims to not remenber why or where he went, but vaguely remembers being in London at some stage where he made an appreaance in Bruce Beresford's film THE ADVENTURES OF BARRY McKENZIE. It was then that it first occurred to him that he may be able to turn his previously problematic lunacy to his advantage.
He returned to New Zealand and gained celebrity as the satirist Fred Dagg on New Zealand television, which later became a radio character in Australia.
Now established in Australia, he co-wrote LONELY HEARTS with director Paul Cox, which won the AFI award for best film in 1982. He drifted back into television and with Andrew Knight, co-wrote two series of the acclaimed FAST LANE and co-wrote and appeared in the highly successful GILLIES REPORT.
He wrote a four hour mini-series about the celebrated Australian war hero 'Weary' Dunlop, and appeared in Stephen Wallace's film BLOOD OATH in between his regular role as political satirist on a top rating television current affairs show.
He played Dave in DEATH IN BRUNSWICK in 1991. |
