Miss Gardner said: "'On the Beach' is a story about the end of the world, and Melbourne sure is the right place to film it." That quote is incorrect it was later rivalled that the Sydney associated Sun Herald editor left it in to fuel the Sydney vs Melbourne rivalry. A young reporter named Neil Jillett never actually got to interview Ava Gardner and thought this rumoured quote was from an unreliable source and expected it to be removed by his senior editor. It was instead left in and published.
