An interview extract from Shirley Barrett about South Solitary

I felt that my approach when writing it often starts with location, to be honest. I find location quite an inspiring setting off point and in this case it was the lighthouse island, but in LOVE SERENADE it was the little town. I had done a lot of research for SOUTH SOLITARY, mainly on the Tasmanian lighthouse island before they had radio communication. That's part of the reason why I set the film in the 20s, because they didn't have any means of communicating with mainland and they really were reliant on homing pigeons, not very successfully, and signal flags whenever a ship might pass them and I just thought that it was really interesting for a writer too to just be in a - to have that situation where just a small group of characters were thrust together in adversity and, there was often adversity on those places. There are really no lighthouses left in Australia that work in that way. Most of them are automated and have electric lamps in them as opposed to kerosene lanterns so we had to rig up that. The lens that you see in the film, the big prism lens, is the real thing and that's in Cape Otway and we were really so lucky - although it was very difficult because it's such a tiny room to film in there and every time we moved the whole crew had to walk down 100 odd steps and get out of the way and then come all the way back up again when it was reset. So it was difficult but I really loved being in the real thing. I just - even though I banged my head over and over again on the gantry, it just adds so much to be up there. We'd be up there all night with the wind howling around us and this beautiful big light turning above us and it was - it's a wonderful feeling.
