Dargis' article provides an insightful investigation into the miens of gender appropriation in the Road Movie genre.
More than simply stating that it is usually a genre dominated by the 'male buddy film', Dargis provides her readership with explanations as to why 'masculinity equals action' is a truism relied upon by most directors of the Road Movie genre. |
Synopsis |
Throughout her article, Dargis investigates the notion of the Road Movie being primarily driven by the male individual whereby the genre "..makes literal the rite of passage that Oedipally driven narratives demand of their male heroes. If a woman hops a ride with a man, the journey, perfumed with a female sexuality, breeds danger and violence rather than pleasure."(16)
According to Dargis, for women the Road Movie is a dangerous place, for they are objectified with their body becoming representative of another metaphorical frontier that "...remains only to be explored, ravaged and eventually domesticated - by motherhood and marriage, no less."(16) |
