Comments Julie Szego writes in “Keeping it reel”, that despite rumors regarding the sale of the ‘Astor Theatre’ (Melbourne), that proprietor George Florence “does not plan to walk away from the Astor”. Rather, according to Szego, George Florence ideally suggests that a new buyer “would purchase the freehold…together with the business and … invest freely in both”. In addition, as according to Julie Szego, George Florence suggests that “whoever ends up buying the elegant art deco cinema in St Kilda (might) keep him on as a consultant”. Julie Szego examines George Florence’s personal history with regards to the development of the ‘Astor Theatre’ (Melbourne), and examines George Florence’s contention that “it’s time for someone as excited as me to take over, someone who can bring new capital, new energy, and take the Astor into a new phase”.
Synopsis Notably, Julie Szego’s article entitled “Keeping it reel” presents a short-list of recent Melbourne ‘art-house’ cinemas that have closed their doors; entitled “Fade Out”. Julie Szego lists the following cinemas as having recently closed: “The Lumiere Cinema” (Lonsdale Street) (*Closed August 2005), “The Longford” (South Yarra) (*Closed 2001), “The Trak Cinema” (Toorak) (*Closed 2000), “The Carlton Moviehouse” (Faraday Street) (*Closed 1999), and “The Valhalla Cinema” (Richmond) (*Closed 1996).
