Comments This is a fascinating read! Bertrand provides the subtext to the letters written between Hawes, Murphy and Williams. She adds another dimension to the letters by interviewing Judy Adamson, who worked at the Film Unit while Mike and Stefani was being produced.

Immigration, creative differences, fear and the political environment are all bundled up in 'Mike and Stefani'. The film resonates in contemporary Australia society, where entry procedures for refugees are publicly debated, and government funding continues to determine the majority of feature films we make.
Synopsis As 'Mike and Stefani'was shot in post war Germany, Maslyn Williams writes to Hawes and Murphy about his plans for making the film. Bertrand puts the correspondence between Hawes, Murphy and Williams into context. She explains the workings of the Film Divison of the Department of the Information, the personalities (see key names) and the political situation which prompted the commissioning of Mike and Stefani and subsequently determined its restricted distribution and exhibition.
