Boyle claims that the film adaptation of Walkabout is a huge improvement on the children's novel it was based upon.
The film is apparently much more complex than the range of "romantic", "sexist", "misogynistic" stereotypes exhibited in the novel.
In relation to Walkabout's representation of the landscape, Boyle claims that: "Roeg not only shows the landscape; he also uses it as a visual metaphor for the internal state of his characters."
Boyle believes that miscommunication is not at the heart of the character's problems but "the dnager the erotic poses for all people".
