Byrnes does not recognise Walkabout as an Australian film, but claims that both Walkabout and Wake in Fright "energized the push for an indigenous Australian film industry". Byrnes also makes the bold statement that Walkabout was the film that led directly to Peter Weir's Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975).
Byrnes makes the mistake of claiming that the added scenes to the director's cut include the 'Missionary' sequence, and thus misreads the original version.
Byrnes refers to the relationship between Walkabout and Australian contemporary politics, claiming the film's rerelease is timely considering "the current climate of race relations in Australia". |
