The article is quite an extensive report on a hit and run that was committed in the St. George vicinity and involved Mr J. McFarlane as an important witness. The story surrounds one James Galvin, who was set to appear before the Footscray court, to answer a charge of having driven a vehicle in a negligent manner, and by doing so inflicted injury upon Mrs. McNamara, of Yarraville.
Where Mr. J McFarlane was involved was that it would appear that, he was standing at the door of the theatre on the day in question, and being a prominent figure in the community was asked as a witness. He spoke of a âjinkerâ, colloquiail term for a man on a cart, approaching fast. As he moved out of his position to get a better look he saw a woman lying on the road and the driver pulling up. It would appear at that time numerous witnesses gathered at the scene and suggested that the accused take the injured woman to her home. He agreed but endeavoured to drive off. Witness chased him for about 70 yards, and made him return. The woman was carried into a shop close by, and the accused and his companions disappeared by way of the railway station. Daughter of the woman Irene McNamara told of how Mr. Gavlin had called their home and offered to pay £10 to for medical expenses,
Mr. McFarlane said he did not propose to call the accused as a witness, as he was in bad health, and might collapse. Christopher Harris, a returned soldier, said Galvin did not attempt to run away. Before further questions could be put the witness fainted and had to be removed. The defence was then abandoned.
Galvin was ultimately fined 40.
Whilst not directly involved with the theatre, it does speak of J. McFarlane and gives us the biggest information on his life yet. We can tell that he is a respected and prominent figure of Yarraville during that period. |
