An article in the Independent of July 5th 1919 speaks of the St. George and relates to how an import tool the St. George was in the public life of Yarraville at that time. The article talks of a âpicture nightâ that would be held at the hall in aid of the Yarraville and Footscray relief funds. It speaks of a Mr Corboy and Mr Predergast would address the public to deal with the question of affording relief.
Looking into this situation it would become aware, that at the time the western suburbs of Yarraville and Footscray were under distress because of strikes occurring. What caused these strikes is unclear but it becomes apparent that the suburbs want to ask those who are fortunate enough, to provide assistance where they can as many are without work even though they are anxious to get back to it.
The St. George was a required part of the community because it helped these events that needed it's help. Almost acting as a sort of refuge.
