Comments It's quite ironic that the last film to be played at The Tivoli upon its closure was titled The End of the Road. Given the film was made for the purposes of the army and given the first World War had ended it may have been seen by The Tivoli as a positive way to mark the end of an era given the business was closing down. The film was released in 1919, however The Tivoli did not screen the film until 1921 to Melbourne based audiences.

The End of the Road tells the story of two women, Mary and Vera. Mary leaves her boyfriend to become a nurse in New York. Vera is encouraged by her mother to marry a wealthy man. Vera moves into an apartment with a rich man who says he'll marry her, however Vera attracts a disease off him known as syphilis. Mary and her doctor treat Vera and show her examples of people with the disease. The film was shown as part of the national campaign of the Social Hygiene Division of the War Department Commission on Training Camp Activities. The Tivoli was reputable for showing insightful films as judged by when the venue reopened. The film itself would've also been regarded as educational for not just people serving in the army, but the public as well who'd become better aware of the syphilis disease. Protected sex was not heard of during that time so the film would've been confronting but at the same time beneficial for audiences.

Synopsis The End of the Road was released in the States in 1919 and was the last film to be screened at the Tivoli Picture Theatre upon its closure in 1921.
