This book was only relevant for two pages but the information provided was interesting and very relevant.
The chapter "The Two 'Boom' Periods", is very useful in terms of thinking about Roeg as an 'outsider' making an "Australian" film. Like Susan Dermody, the authors see international directors as emphasising certain aspects of Australian culture with very pertinent results. Wake In Fright and Walkabout are seen as "still two of the finest films made in Australia and both 'seeing' a difficult, even hostile landscape with the fresh eyes of those for whom the impact is new"(121). The chapter "The Films: Britain (1940-1960) and Australia (1970-1990)" draws not altogether relevant parallels between Aussie films like Walkabout and Wake In Fright as literary adaptations, and notes the prevelance of this form in both national cinemas. The authors question what the popularity of conservative romances like Man From Snowy River rather than Walkabout say about Aussie audiences clinging to a stereotyped "agrarian vision"(195).
