Comments A short article in the Argus describing the opening of The Regent Theatre, Fitzroy. The description of the cinema gives an interesting insight into how cinemas were built in the 1920’s. The amount of people that the cinema could hold is astonishing, 2500 people. The grand design of the cinema as described in the news article is quite different to what you would see in cinemas today. This article explains the layout of the new cinema, commenting on the grand lobby and describing the design of the theatre down to the crystal chandelier. The cinema is designed as such that it is fully equipped to also be used as a live theatre venue which it does go on to do between 1960's-1980's. (AshG)
Synopsis The cinema, which will be able to seat 2500 people, is described as becoming one of Melbourne’s most state-of-the-art and modern cinemas of its time. The cinema was previously known as Solway theatre which was owned by Hoyts Theatres and fully refurbished by the architect Mr. Charles. N. Hollagshed. The article describes the layout of the venue and the atmosphere for cinema goers.(AshG)
