de Vil's tas Mania is a curious film which ranges from laughable in some places (generally concerning stilted dialogue) to exposing complex and subtle relationships between characters which is left somewhat open to audience interpretation. An ambitious film in terms of narrative, the film falls down in areas such as dialogue and exposition, but retains a complexity which requires audience involvement, and a few memorable cameos, particularly that of Sam Hood as Quayle. The film was screened in Hobart and Launceston Film Societies and was funded entirely by private investors and sponsors. |
| Synopsis |
Jack de Vils and Sam Dale escape from a prison farm and seek refuge with a group of women and children travellers who are camping on the beach. They are pursued by the warder Burgess and team up with the shifty 'bolters' Musquito and his friend. In their efforts to survive and escape detection, Jack encounters Eliza, a girl who believes him to be her father, Mary, a young woman who aids his survival, and Julia, the barmaid with whom he forms a relationship of sorts. De vil's tas Mania is best described as surreal adventure. It was originally aimed at adults but it appears children cope better with the non linear story and time shifts within the film. |
