Copyright Title To Love A Maori
Released 1972
Director Rudall Hayward, Ramai Hayward
Comments 'To Love A Maori' is the last of Rudall Hayward's seven feature films, and is the only one he ever made in colour. It is also the first colour feature made by a New Zealander in New Zealand. (Edwards & Martin, p.56 "New Zealand Film 1912-1996")
Synopsis Two young Maori men, Tama and Ricki, leave their rural settlement to go to Auckland. Tama is in search of training for a job whereas Riki is a little aimless. Tama falls in love with a Pakeha girl Penny, and Ricki falls for Fancy, though he only really values her material worth. Throughout the film, Tama and Penny sustain their love despite Penny's parents reluctant attitudes towards their relationship. Eventually the parents accept the situation, and meanwhile Riki learns to stay away from crime, and finds a purpose by joining the army.
