Title Sweet Savage
Released 1979
Production Year 1979
Comments Released in 1979, written and directed by Ann Perry and stating Carol Connors, Aldo Ray and Beth Anna, Sweet Savage may be affectionately described as a warped racist sexualized version of Romeo and Juliet story, or simply a ‘Western porno’. In this story, an Indian-American woman (Shy Dove, played by Beth Anna) falls in love with a white American cowboy (Damon, played by Jon Hollabaugh) causing a chain of racially motivated gang-rapes to occur in response. The films formula revolves around the white Americans initial rape of the Indian woman, and escalates once the Indian tribe retaliates by kidnapping and raping a white American girl (Technicolor Yawn). For a film of its time and genre, the production values are significant. For our purposes, despite being a porno, the film explores similar territory established by newsreels. It plays on perceptions on romanticized perceptions of the exotic and unknown, and uses erotic tones to explore the more shocking elements of racial division and hate - all in the name of entertainment. - Jarred Hofman
