Peter Chan's career in the film business began as assistant director for Chua Lam at Golden Harvest.
Throughout the early 1980s, he was production assistant and assistant director for directors John Woo, Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan and David Lai.
From 1987 to 1989, Chan and Eric Tsang for a new company Alan & Eric and produced NEWSATTACK independently before Chan joined Impact Film. In 1992, Chan co-founded United Filmmakers Organisation (UFO) with Tsang and Claudie Chung.

Over the years, Chan has produced and directed numerous award winning films and box office hits including:
