Alex Proyas was born in Egypt in 1961 (exact date unknown), and moved to Australia at three years of age. At 17 years he was accepted into the Australia Film Television and Radio School, and his first year short, "Groping", a rather violent film, won awards around the world. After leaving the AFTRS, he formed a production company called Meaningful Eye Contact in 1984 with Sean Callinan and Peter Miller. The company has been responsible for many television commericals, music video clips for the likes of Crowded House and INXS, and Proyas' first feature film (writer and director) "Spirits of The Air, Gremlins of the Clouds", made in 1987.
Proyas video clip work made him a wanted commodity in Hollywood, and in 1994 his first Hollywood film, "The Crow", was released. 1998 saw the release of "Dark City", filmed and directed (& written) by Proyas in Australia, also using Australian special effects designers.
Proyas is now renowned as a cult director, following the success of "Dark City" and "The Crow" which found large cult audiences. |
