One of Ausralia's prevalent film and television producers, Tony (as he prefers to be called) Buckley has produced a a variety of films in a variety of meduims. He began work under Ken Hall as a film editor, he was also known to direct films early on in his career until finally settling into the role of film and television producer.
Tim is heavily involvement in the politics of film production and his involvement in the reshaping of the Australian film industry. Scott Murray's book documents the time when Buckley was the secretary of the APDGA (Aust prod dir guild of Aust) which became a group that helped to impose the 1961 ruling that forced all television commercials to be made in Australia. This was seen to help breed new talent and promote growth in the medium.
Most importantly, in 1967 Buckley produced, directed and edited a 55 minute historical feature titled "Forgotten Cinema", which seems like a precursor to his "Celluloid Heroes" series. The struggle of Australian cinema to gain recognition and to raise enough money to finance films are issues that Anthony is passionate about.
Buckley says that his main aim in the industry is to make "good commercial films", always modest and always down to earth, his aims seem just as selfconcoiusly rooted in reality and as gloriously average as those of the characters in his film "Dad and Dave". And just like Dad Rudd, Buckley is alway battling against a greater institutional hierarchy, that of the government. Government funding, regulation and the price of making a good film are all something that Anthony Buckley will keep fighting for.
