Having grown up in a show business family, including his father, vetran actor Gus Mercurio, Paul went to a special theatre arts school in Western Australia and started training as a dancer at the age of nine. He eventually left school to take up a full time ballet scholarship with the Western Australian Ballet Company.From there he was accepted into the Australian Ballet School.
He has been known as one of Australia's best dancers and choreographers and has been performing with the Sydney Dance Company since 1982 (as a principal sicne 1983). During his time there, he performed in over thirty productions, with principal and feature roles in "The Selfish Giant", "Some Rooms", "After Venice", "Vast", "Kaarnberg", "Soft Bruising" and "King David". As a dancer, he has toured the world, performing in counties such as Japan, China, Greece, Italy, Spain, Holland, Turkey, Portugal, Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore, as well as London and New York.
As a choreographer for the Sydney Dance Company, his has produced works such as "Still Life", "Sirens" (Madonna section), "Duo for Two Boys", "Two Men and One Woman", Dancing With I" and "Waiting".
Playing Scott Hastings, "Strictly Ballroom" was Paul's film debut.
