Paul Hogan grew up in Lightning Ridge, New South Wales. After leaving school, he worked as an apprentice moulder, on the railways, the Waterboard, a flour mill, in transport, on wharves and at abottoirs. He then worked on the Sydney Harbour Bridge for seven years. At the age of thirty, Hogan decided to go on New Faces. He described himself on the application form as a tapdancer, knife-thrower and trapeze artist - but once in front of the camera he started to send up the show and the way it was run. He didn't like the way that the judges assumed superiority over the contestants, and the audience loved him for it. This lead to an invitation to appear weekly on Mike Willisee's A Current Affair, where Hogan aquired quite a fan base. He hit the club circuit and was emplyed as the face of Fosters beer in the U.K. and Winfield cigarettes in Australia. Hogan started his own TV series - The Paul Hogan Show, a successful seventies sketch comedy series. Hogan made his rather unmemorable acting debut in the TV miniseries ANZACS. In the early 1980's, he was picked up by the Australian Tourism Commission for a series of ads to run in the States. This campaign sent U.S. tourists flocking to the land downunder in record numbers. In 1986, with a high profile but no experience with film, Hogan wrote and starred in Crocodile Dundee, which surprised even Hogan by smashing box office records all over the world. (Hogan's Croc co-star was New York actress Linda Kozlowski. Hogan left his wife for Kozlowski in 1987 and the pair have recently had their first child together.) Still riding on Crocodile Dundee's phenomenal success, Hogan wrote and starred in the sequal (imaginatively called Crocodile Dundee II) which was released in 1988. Since the Crocodile success stories, Hogan has had some pretty unsuccessful roles in some pretty unsuccessful films such as Flipper (1996), Lightening Jack (1994) and Almost an Angel (1990). However, to this day he can be seen on U.S. television advertising Subarus - still dressed in his Crocodile Dundee outfit a decade after the release of the sequal.
Filmography: 1947 T-Men (ac). 1952 Kansas City Confidential (ac). 1985 Anzacs (ac). 1986 Crocodile Dundee (sc, ac). 1988 Crocodile Dundee II (exec-p, ac). 1989 The Humpty Dumpty Man (d, sc). 1990 Almost An Angel (exec-p, ac). 1994 Lightning Jack (sc). 1996 Flipper (ac). |
