Name Mary Whitehouse
Comments Mary Whitehouse was born in 1910. She was one of the central figures who influenced censorship law in the 1970's and 80's in Australia. Whitehouse was is best known for her work as a 'morals crusader' and as the spearhead for such movements as the 'Clean Up Tv' campaign in her naitive England in 1964.

Whitehouse first visited Australia in 1973, and was a regular public speaker on her trips here (There are several incidents where her crowd tried to stop her speaking)

She launched the Australian bracnch of the Festival of Light' but her main impact was the lobbying she did in 1984 with the reverend Fred Nile to have the newly formed 'X' rating rejected in every state.

She was in the press quite a lot in Australia around that time.

She has written several books including her autobiography: Quite Contrary (Sidgwick and Jackson, 1993).
