Born in Hong Kong in 1956, Shu Kei was a film critic in his teens and began writing scripts for television while still at university. During this period, Shu worked with such notable directors as ann Hui, Patrick Tam, Yim Ho, Allen Fong and Tsui Hark.
Upon graduation, he joined Golden Harvest Film Company as scriptwriter and assistant director for Yim Ho's THE HAPPENINGS in 1979. The following year, he wrote the script for John Woo's TO HELL WITH THE DEVIL. In 1981, Shu directed his first feature, SEALED WITH A KISS.
5 years later, Shu set up his own company, Shu Kei's Creative Workshop Ltd. to distribute specialised films. In 1990, he directed a documentary feature SUNLESS DAYS about the June 4, 1989 Tiananmen Massacre for Japan's NHK (television).
HU DU MEN (1996), his fourth featyre, opened the Hong Kong Film Festival and was also Hong Kong's entry as Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. |
