Leighton played a starring role as Tommy Dawson in 'Thoroughbred' with Helen Twelvetrees in 1936, and their working relationship also became an intimate one off the set - a fact that was successfully concealed from the public.
At one time, Leighton held the Amateur Lightweight Boxing Championship within the vicinity of somewhere in NSW if not nationally. Before entering film, he worked in stage performances for the J.C. Williamson company, and was also noted in Australian musical comedy.
