Name Lawrence Johnston
Comments Lawrence Johnston is a graduate of the VCA (formerly Swinburne) School of Film and Television. He has quickly developed a reputation as one of Australia's most exciting and innovative directors.

Originally from Queensland, Lawrence developed a passion for the cinema whilst working for Village Roadshow breaking up film prints at the end of their run. On moving to Melbourne he worked as a tram 'connie' before undertaking film studies at the VCA.

Lawrence's graduating student film, Night Out was flattered with a short theatrical release and an invitation to the Cannes Film Festival, and was screened locally in the first independantly run Melbourne Queer Film and Video Festival. He has also won awards for his other films "Life" and "Eternity", in 1996 recieveing the Greg Tepper award with a prize of $5000 for "Life" which was also screened at the Melbounre Film Festival that year.

Lawrence Johnston was festival director in the second year of the independantly run Melbourne Queer Film and Video Festival in 1991, and has a reputation in both queer screen culture and local arts culture in general.

He has been an outstanding personality in the local queer scene, helping in many ways to bring queer to a more mainstream audience, and has been a contravercial figure on several occasions for standing up for his artistic merits.
