Name John Timlin
Comments Administrator/producer/agent/writer

John Timlin was born in Melbourne. His father was a business man who had emigrated from Ireland in 1915 and his mother was from Echuca. Timlin grew up in Footscray.

He was schooled at Mentone Grammar and after graduating from high school studied teaching at Mersa House. He began teaching at Melbourne and Ivanhoe Grammar respectively until a desire to study polotics, German, and phlisophy at Monash University led to him takeing up employment as a wharfy. During this time he joined the communist party.

He never finished the degree and he moved to a job as a salesman for a plastic company. Eventualy he started his own business which went bankrupt in 1961. He started working as a mechanic in his fathers factory unitl again he started his own business.

Perhaps the theatre was in his blood for his mother was a great niece of George Bernard Shaw (which would make him something far too long to elucidate). Thus when an acqaintance with Jack Hibberd turned into an apportunity to be involved as a garauntor and administrator for the Pram Factory, Timlin soon agreed to become involved.

Timlin personally took out a three year lease on the building and materials from his factory were used in converting the building into a theatre.

Timlin continued to be the chief administrator for almost the entire history of the Pram Factory, only relinquishing his role for periods when he concerntrated on other APG related areas. He helped set up an APG record label, Pram Factory Productions, and the Almost Managing Company which acted as both literary and actors agent for people inolved with the APG.

After the demise of the APG in the early eighties, Timlin continued to work with various ex-members of the group, includng among other things the ill-fated musical 'Manning Clarke's History of Australia'. Further he continued his work as director of the Almost Mangaging Company. In recent years Timlin has donated much documentation regarding his work in the theatre to various museums and Libraries.
