A.E. Lydford was born in Bristol in 1874. He migrated to Australia in 1905 and established himself as a builder in the Melbourne suburb of Oakleigh. He conceived the idea to build the New Mentone Theatre and he together with his three sons build and operated the theatre until the early 30's. Due to the depression they were forced to sell.
Mr. Lydford is notable for being the first cinema managers in Victoria to recognise the benefits of 'talkies' over silent films. His installation of the required technology meant that the New Mentone was the first cinema outside the Melbourne CBD to be able to screen films with audio. |
