Born the son of an aristocratic banker Baron Carl Alphons in Vienna 1908, Paul studied to become a translator and book designer at the Maria Theresa Academy and the Institute of fine arts. Following his graduation in 1927 he worked for four years in this field whilst training to be an actor by night. After seeing Henreid perform in one of his acting schoolâs productions, Otto Preminger (The owner of the publishing firm for which Henreid worked) introduced him to Max Reinhardt who offered Henreid a contract. In 1933 Henreid made his debut in Reinhardtâs Faust, this was followed by several leading roles on the stage and some appearances in Australian films.
Henreid made his English speaking film debut in Sam Wood's 1939 Goodbye Mr. Chips, a long career of films was born from this with him starring in some more well known motion pictures such as âNight Train to Munichâ âThe Spanish Mainâ and âCasablancaâ.
Although being blacklisted as a Communist supporter due to his outspoken opposition to McCarthyism he re-emerged as a director on second features and television episodes of Screen Gems, Desilu and other such companies.
Henreid died of pneumonia following a stroke in Santa Monica hospital in April 1992. (Brinagh Hassett)
