The father of Australian surf movies, Evans began his film career by bringing the US filmaker Bud Browne and his movies to Australia.
After successfully screening US surfmovies in rented halls and small cinemas, Evans made his first feature in 1960, going on to make a film a year for the rest of the decade.
While not the first person to make a surf movie in Australia (that honour goes to the '50s surfer/shaper Joe Larkin), Evans established the circuit that made it possible for others to make, distribute and exhibit their own films.
He also founded Surfing World magazine.
