Cinema and Theatre Historical Society (also known as Caths) is an organisation committed to the preservation of Melbournes diverse cinema culture. They house an extensive collection of archives, with film magazines, interviews and primary research conducted in the interest of investigating venues- and their status. (Elia Lom)
They claim their aims are as follows:
⢠Foster interest in cinema and theatre heritage
⢠Provide facilities for the public to research cinemas and related matters
⢠Seek to preserve theatre and cinema buildings and artefacts
⢠Promote interest in cinema and theatre architecture
⢠Record the history of cinemas and theatres
⢠Organise events to facilitate inspections and documenting of cinema venues.
With this in mind they publish extensive collections of listings of venues, as well as their status, seating numbers, affiliations, and years operating. With over 300 listings of venues that have operated from Victoria, South Australia and Queensland, they have compiled an extensive database proving a solid reference source to begin investigations on venues, as well as images, photos and quotes where it has been possible to attain them.
CATHS also conducts constant research, facilitates meetings for those interested in cinema culture, assists with research, and releases publications with developments to their databases.
CATHS is open to visit by appointment, and they are rapid in response to queries. They are a fantastic reference source for all queries, assisting as much as possible. It is through CATHS I was able to find the now extinct Orient Cinemaâs years of operation, 300 seating capacity, and pointers to references in other magazines.
